Dogdogs Posts

Pekingese dogs are part of the toy group and can be Red, Fawn, White, Black and Brindle in colour.

Origins of the Pekingese

The Pekingese originated in China and received its name from the ancient city of Peking, which is today known as Beijing City. They were mainly owned by the Chinese royalty and were considered to be sacred dogs, which drove away evil spirits. In 1860 when the British took over the Imperial Palace, the Chinese Imperial guards were ordered to kill all of the Pekingese dogs to prevent them from falling in to the hands of the “foreign devils”. However, 5 of the little dogs fortunately survived and were then given to Queen Victoria. It was from these 5 survivors that the Pekingese breed still exists today.

Sizes of the Typical Male and Female Pekingese

The Pekingese is a small dog and part of the toy breed group. Adult Pekingese typically weigh between 2.75kg to 5.5kg. The height could vary from 15cm to 23cm. Both male and female Pekingese grow the same in sizes.

Pekingese Coats

The Pekingese has a very long, double coat, which should be brushed daily. It is advised to take extra care around the hind quarters while brushing, as this area can become tangled and even soiled. The male and female Pekinese will shed their top coat constantly throughout the year and the females will shed their bottom coat while in season.

Appearance of the Pekingese

The Pekingese can come in a wide variety of colours such as: Red, Fawn, White, Black and Brindle. The breed will usually have a black muzzle or mask, although some may have light coloured masks.

Pekingese Temperament

The Pekingese has great temperaments, a great family dog who devotes himself to his owner. He is full of personality and naturally well mannered, However, he is one of the most stubborn and self-opinionated breeds of all. Although he is a small dog, he is a very energetic dog and dislikes to be left out of any family activities.

Pekingese Puppies

The Pekingese puppies when they are new-born or very young can catch colds very easily; you should always acquire your Pekingese from a reputable and kc registered breeder, who take great care in looking after them.Pekingese puppies should not leave their mother until at least they are 8 weeks old.

Cost of Pekingese

From a breeder, Pekingese puppies normally cost around £400 – £700 in the UK.

The Life Expectancy of a Pekingese

Pekingese typically live for 12 to 14 years.

What Health Problems Can Pekingese Suffer From

The Pekingese are reasonably likely to have; eye injuries, breathing difficulties, back problems, tear gland defects, sore nose wrinkles, over-heating, kneecap dislocation (patella Luxation), and sore nose wrinkles.
It would be highly advisable to obtain trustworthy pet insurance with this breed as well as a good reputable vet.

Exercising Your Pekingese

The Pekingese enjoys going for walks, but due to their heavy coat and breathing problems, it makes it hard for him to venture far. He will be happy to go for a daily walk, but only at his own pace and to his own choice of distance; this will keep him happy and also healthy. A Pekingese should never be exercised during hot weather conditions as he can overheat very quickly.

Jack Russell Terriers will have primarily white bodies with a combination of markings, either black, tan, or a combination of the two (known as tri-colour).

Origins of the Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell’s are the descendants of the now extinct English White terrier. They were first bred by the Reverend John Russell, a hunting enthusiast and namesake for the breed, for their need to be distinguishable from their prey when working on a hunt. Jack Russell’s were first recognised as a distinct breed in the 1850s. Following World War II, the need for hunting dogs lessened, and so Jack Russell’s became increasingly used as pets.

Sizes of Typical Male and Female Jack Russell Terriers

The Jack Russell is classed as a medium sized dog, with a height varying from 25cm to 38cm. Adult Jack Russell’s typically weigh between 6.4 and 8.2 kg. There does not tend to be a height difference between males and females.

Jack Russell Terrier Temperament

These dogs, being extremely intelligent, require a lot of stimulation, both physical and mental, or they can become moody and destructive. Also, dogs that are not properly socialised can be stubborn and possibly aggressive towards other animals and humans. Obedience training is recommended to anyone considering bringing a Jack Russell Terrier into their home.

Jack Russell Terrier Coats

Coats vary from smooth to rough, or a combination of the two which is known as broken coated. Brushing with a soft currycomb up to twice a week is the recommended grooming regime, regardless of coat type.

Exercise Your Jack Russell Terrier

This breed is particularly energetic, and potential owners should ensure they have the time (and energy!) to exercise these dogs daily, often for several hours at a time. Their high energy and intelligence make Jack Russell Terriers an ideal breed for disciplines such as agility or flyball.

What Health Problems can Jack Russell Terriers Suffer From?

Jack Russell’s are known for their remarkably good health, yet some strains of the breed are genetically predisposed to eye and patella (knee-cap) related weaknesses. However, as a whole, they remain one of the healthiest dog breeds.

The Life Expectancy of a Jack Russell Terrier

Due to their famous good health, Jack Russell Terriers can live anywhere from 13 to 16 years on average with proper care.

The Cost of a Jack Russell Terrier

The average cost of a Jack Russell puppy is between £300-500.

Jack Russell Terrier Puppies

Jack Russell puppies are energetic and playful, and dislike being alone. Ideally, training should begin as soon as possible to avoid bad habits (such as chewing) from developing. When buying your puppy, always ask to see the mother, and the father if possible, to avoid disreputable breeders or puppy farmers.
